The Freedom Between

I remember looking through my camera and watching this Arctic tern move across the grassy plateaux of the inner Farne Islands .

There was no hesitation in its flight.
No doubt about where it was going.

It carried its small prize, utterly absorbed in the simple purpose of the moment.

And I found myself wondering how rarely we live like that.

How often we are somewhere, but our thoughts are already somewhere else.
Carrying yesterday behind us.
Worrying about tomorrow.
Missing the quiet beauty of the moment we are actually living.

Through my lens, for just a few seconds, I stopped.

The world became very still.

Perhaps that is what the wild gives us —
not answers,
but moments when we remember how to simply be where we are.
